Instructions for New and Returning Students

Step 1 – Complete Your 2012 Tax Return

Before beginning the federal online application for financial aid, we recommend you complete and submit your 2012 tax return to the IRS. In addition to recommending the early completion of your 2012 taxes, we strongly recommend you utilize the new IRS Data Retrieval when filing your FAFSA online. IRS Data Retrieval enables you to automatically import tax information into the FAFSA application, saving time and also ensuring accuracy. Furthermore, applicants that are selected for verification by the Department of Education who have not utilized IRS Data Retrieval may be required to resubmit the FAFSA using this option. To take advantage of the IRS Data Retrieval, you need to file your tax returns electronically. Allow two weeks after filing the tax return for this system to import the information into your FAFSA application.

Step 2 – Complete the 2013-14 FAFSA – DUSON School Code: E00162

Additional information for ABSN and Health Informatics Certificate students only

The ABSN program awards a second bachelor’s degree, and the Health Informatics Certificate program awards a post-bachelor's certificate; therefore, students in these programs are considered to be undergraduates for federal financial aid purposes (regardless of advanced degrees attained). For ABSN and Health Informatics students only, the FAFSA should be completed as follows:

  • Degree/Certificate: 2nd Bachelor’s degree (ABSN) or Certificate (Health Informatics)
  • Current Grade Level: 5th year undergraduate

An ABSN or Health Informatics student may be considered a dependent student by the federal government. If so, parent information is required on the FAFSA as well. The FAFSA will ask questions about the student’s age, marital status, degree pursued, military status, dependent support, etc. to determine the dependency status. Please note that this is a federal policy, not DUSON policy, and that it is not dependent on tax filing status and other considerations.

Step 3 – Complete the DUSON financial aid application

Please note that a DUSON financial aid application is not required for returning students.

Step 4 – Report outside scholarships, grants, tuition benefits

If you receive any outside scholarships, state grants, military or employee tuition benefits, or any other outside resources toward your education expenses, you must report this to the Financial Aid Office. Outside resources may be reported through ACES or by email.

Once you have matriculated and received a financial aid award, financial aid information may be viewed on ACES. Tutorials are available to help you learn how to use the Financial Aid tab in ACES.
