Hello! Welcome to our Spring 2016 edition of the Nursing Leadership Exchange. For nearly two decades, Duke University School of Nursing (DUSON) has been committed to scientific inquiry and the advancement of knowledge that transforms care and touches lives.

In this edition, we share some ways that we here at DUSON are creating an innovative environment that is helping to reshape nursing research. I invite you to learn how:

  • Dr. Marilyn Hockenberry and her Center for Nursing Research team transform the services they offer faculty, staff and students to increase the capacity and scope for nurse researchers here at Duke.
  • We will host our first television-inspired event, the Shark Pool, that will allow innovative nursing health care leaders to pitch ideas directly to a panel of experts for a chance to receive start-up funding for their research projects.
  • Dr. Wei Pan leads a new area — the Research Design and Statistics Core with the Center for Nursing Research — that makes statistics and the science of data analytics more accessible for investigators within the School.
  • As a two-time cancer survivor, Dr. Sophia Smith uses her personal background and innovative research focus to develop programs that will improve the quality of life for patients diagnosed with lymphoma, breast and prostate cancers.

Maintaining optimal health and preventing disease for individuals, families and communities depends on collaborative partnerships, and also advancements in nursing research. I hope you will enjoy learning more about the activities that bring our research mission to life and help patients and their families live longer, healthier lives.

Finally, as the academic calendar year comes to a close, let me thank you for letting us share the Nursing Leadership Exchange with you. I invite you to share this newsletter with your colleagues as we continue to work together to improve the profession and practice of nursing.

Sincerely,

Marion E. Broome, PhD, RN, FAAN
