DUSON Nurse Anesthesia Students Show Pride in Profession at National Conference
The nurse anesthesia students of Duke University gave excellent representation at the 2009 American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) Annual Meeting held in San Diego, Calif., August 8-12, 2009. Emily McClanahan Funk, BSN, RN, CCRN, completed her year-long position as the elected Student Representative to the AANA Education Committee. Funk’s duties at the annual meeting included welcoming the students at the first-timer’s orientation; presiding over the student leadership session, student coffee hour and student luncheon; and serving as a judge for the AANA Annual College Bowl.
Emily also participated in a promotional video encouraging Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) and Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists (SRNAs) to renew their membership dues to the AANA, sustaining “the fellowship between other CRNAs not only across the nation, but globally..., [and] maintaining the community of other anesthesia professionals to enhance our practice and professional development.”
Outgoing Student Representative to the Education Committee, Emily Funk, RN, BSN, CCRN, impressed many as she presided over the luncheon, explaining the duties of the student representative – attending 3 meetings (Joint Committee Conference in September, Assembly of School Faculty in the Spring, and the Annual Meeting in August), writing a monthly Student News column in the AANA NewsBulletin, providing student perspective input and making recommendations to the Education Committee.
“We are nurses first, our patients’ advocates,” Funk told the enthusiastic student gathering. She called nurse anesthesia “the best career in healthcare today. We are an outstanding group of people, and leaders in nursing and healthcare.”
Class of 2010 Duke University Nurse Anesthesia Program (DUNAP) students Emily Funk and Nicole Sadowski, BSN, RN, CCRN, were awarded AANA Foundation Scholarships - the Cynthia McNerney Scholarship and the Steve & Suzanne Brown Student Scholarship, respectively - at the student luncheon. Class of 2010 DUNAP students Emily Funk and Gena Burnett, BSN, RN, BS, attended an invitation-only student open forum to the National Board on Certification and Recertification.

Class of 2011 DUNAP student Ross Olson, BSN, RN, (pictured center) participated with gusto in the competitive Annual College Bowl. Olson, along with Team 6, came in 4th place.
DUNAP Program Director J. Frank Titch, MSNA, CRNA, began his term on the AANA Education Committee, assisting in the educational breakout sessions at the Annual Meeting and sitting as a judge at the Annual College Bowl. Clinical Professor Charles Vacchiano, PhD, CRNA, was awarded a 2009 AANA Foundation Post-Doctoral Grant.
