Our New Facility

The Duke University School of Nursing opened a new facility in July 2006 to unite the school's educational activities under one roof and to accommodate the growth of its academic programs. Beautiful hospitality and auditorium spaces equipped with the latest technology are welcoming to the Duke University and Medical Center campuses and community. Open, comfortable, interactive common spaces encourage conversation and collaboration among students, faculty, staff and visitors.

On Trent Drive, centrally located between Duke Clinic and Duke University Hospital, this 58,000-square-foot facility houses laboratories, classrooms and faculty and administrative offices. Next to it sits the Elizabeth C. Clipp Research Building, named in memory of the former associate dean for research affairs; from 1972 until 2006 it served as the school's main building. Beside the Clipp Research Building is Hanes House, built in 1952, which originally served as a dorm and teaching facility for nursing students.

Designed by Ayers/Saint/Gross, Architects and Planners of Baltimore, Maryland, and awarded the Honor Award for Excellence in Design from the Baltimore Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, the new edifice has also received the distinct designation of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver by the United States Green Building Council. The fourth at Duke to earn such designation, it uses resources in a more environmentally friendly manner, as compared to conventional buildings, and offers a better work environment - with an eye toward employee health and comfort. The building's "green" elements fall under the following LEED categories: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials & Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, and Innovation and Design.
