DUKE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF NURSING
MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN NURSING SUMMER PROGRAM
June 8, 2009-July 15, 2009
The Duke University School of Nursing Making a Difference in Nursing Program is a six-week, summer full-time nursing immersion experience for eight non-nursing undergraduates, supported by the Duke Endowment.
By the end of the six week summer program, participating students will:
- Acquire an understanding of the practice of professional nursing as leaders in the health care of humans through education, research, and health care delivery.
- Identify a problem for study in nursing practice, research or education with a designated mentor; investigate the problem using a scientific approach; and share the results in a scholarly presentation to peers, faculty and other interested parties.
- Develop a personal career trajectory plan with the assistance of a career counselor and other informants.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS: The program activities are substantial, requiring a full-time commitment from each student (students cannot work, take classes, participate in other summer programs, or go on vacation while in the program). Attendance at meetings and seminars is mandatory.
AWARDS: Each student will receive a $4,000 stipend, support for up to two visits home, depending on location, and free on-campus housing.
ELIGIBILITY: Making a Difference in Nursing Program fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to college undergraduates who are US citizens and permanent residents, who are beginning their senior year, who meet the grade point average requirement, and who have not declared nursing as a major. Priority will be given to students from under represented groups in nursing: American Indian/Alaskan, Asian/Pacific Islander, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Male.
GPA Requirement: 3.0 and above in all majors
