When do you accept applications?
Most programs accept applications for fall, spring and summer admission. However, the Nurse Anesthesia, Nursing Education, Adult Nurse Practitioner (online option only), Family Nurse Practitioner (online option only) and Geriatric Nurse Practitioner (online option only) admit students for spring study only. Students matriculate into the Accelerated BSN Program each fall and spring semester.

What programs are offered online?

Online options are available for the following programs: Clinical Research Management, Nursing and Healthcare Leadership, Nursing Informatics, Nursing Education, Adult Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner and Geriatric Nurse Practitioner.

What are your application deadlines?

Applications are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis, with the following submission deadlines:
ABSN Program
  • July 1st for Spring enrollment
  • December 1st for Fall enrollment
MSN/Post Master's Certificate
  • August 1st for Fall enrollment
  • December 1st for Spring enrollment
  • April 2nd for Summer enrollment
  • March 1st for Summer and Fall merit scholarships
  • October 1st for Spring merit scholarship
 
Nurse Anesthesia Program
  • May 1st for Spring enrollment

DNP Program
  • September 15 for post-bachelor's applicants for Spring enrollment
  • February 1 for post-bachelor's applicants for Summer enrollment
  • February 1 for post-master's applicants for Fall enrollment
  • May 1 for post-bachelor's applicants for Fall enrollment
     

Does Duke require the GRE or MAT?

Students applying for enrollment must submit a GRE (Graduate Record Examination) score. Applicants for Post-masters study are not required to submit test scores unless they are applying for the merit scholarship. GRE scores should be sent directly to the Duke School of Nursing. Our GRE code is R5156. Please visit GRE Resources for additional information.

Our preferred score on the GRE is 1000 (combined Verbal & Quantitative) and a Writing Analysis score of 3.5.

Is part-time study available?
Yes, part-time study is available (excluding the Nurse Anesthesia and Accelerated BSN Programs). In most cases, students may work directly with their advisor to develop a course plan that is individually tailored to personal needs.

How often will I have classes?
Most on-campus graduate courses are taught one day a week. Students are generally able to group their courses so that they are on campus 2 days a week, which allows students to continue to work while attending school.

How many years of nursing experience must I have before applying to Duke's graduate programs?
It is recommended, but not required, that applicants have one year of nursing experience before applying. Applicants to the Nurse Anesthesia Program are required to have at least one year of acute care RN experience. All Neonatal Nurse Practitioner applicants need two years of clinical experience before starting clinical courses.

Is financial aid available?
Yes, more than 80% of our students receive financial aid, which may include merit or need-based scholarships, and low-interest loans. We offer one-on-one counseling and personal assistance with the entire financial aid process. Tuition assistance is available to Duke nurses with one or more years of service.
