ABSN Scholarships

Eligibility Requirements
Scholarships are awarded to ABSN students who have demonstrated need for financial assistance.

How to Apply

To apply, students are required to complete the FAFSA, DUSON financial aid application, ABSN scholarship cover sheet, and applicable essay(s) as described for each of the scholarships noted below by February 15 for Fall admission or Aug 6 for Spring admission. These scholarships are only available to US eligible citizens.

Broadening the Community Scholarships – Three $10,000 scholarships awarded per incoming class to students who-by reason of their background, culture, ethnicity, gender, race,or sexual orientation- contribute to a broader community within the School of Nursing. The School of Nursing’s commitment to promoting and benefiting from diversity leads it to encourage nominations from applicants who are underrepresented in nursing. The $10,000 will be credited to the students’ tuition bill by applying $2,500 in each of the four semesters that they are enrolled in the ABSN Program.

Eligibility Requirements:

Service to the Public Scholarships – Two $10,000 scholarships awarded per incoming class to students who have demonstrated a commitment to service at a local, regional or national level. The $10,000 will be credited to the students’ tuition bill by applying $2,500 in each of the four semesters that they are enrolled in the ABSN Program.

Eligibility Requirements:

Rise to the Challenge Scholarships – Two $10,000 scholarships awarded per incoming class to students who have overcome significant life challenges to pursue a career in nursing. The $10,000 will be credited to the students’ tuition bill by applying $2,500 in each of the four semesters that they are enrolled in the ABSN Program.

Eligibility Requirements:

Need Based Scholarships – Number and amounts will vary (Up to $7,500 each) based upon the available amount and the number of eligible students. The amount awarded per student will be the available amount divided by the number of approved students. The amount awarded will be credited to the students’ tuition bill by applying 25% of the awarded amount in each of the four semesters that they are enrolled in the ABSN program.

How to Apply

To apply, students are required to complete the FAFSA and DUSON financial aid application. No separate application is required and all students who submit a FAFSA will be automatically considered. The deadline to apply is the last day of drop/add for each semester.

Award Amount
Once awarded, the scholarships cover a fixed percentage of tuition costs, ranging from 10 to 45%, for the student’s entire program of study, provided the student remains in good academic standing.

School of Nursing Merit Scholarships


Prospective Students who are applying to enter the MSN, RN to MSN Pathway, Post-Master's Certificate or DNP programs, entering the Duke University School of Nursing for the first time, and meeting eligibility requirements are encouraged to apply for the Merit Scholarship. These competitive scholarships cover 75% of tuition to complete the student's selected program of study. Students may apply for a merit scholarship one time only. University Scholars Program


The University Scholar is chosen from among the fall semester merit scholarship recipients and is only awarded when a student first enters into a program. University Scholars' recipients receive 100% tuition funding and the opportunity to participate in professional seminars and study throughout their career at Duke. There is no application process for the University Scholars Program. Merit recipients, selected for the University Scholars Program by a school official, are exceptional, creative and exhibit wide interdisciplinary interests and commitments. They show evidence of profiting by intellectual collaboration and exchange at the very highest levels. They are good communicators who can share their specialized knowledge and challenging ideas with faculty in other fields, with fellow postgraduate scholars from across the graduate departments and professional schools, as well as with brilliant undergraduates.
