2016 Pursuing Radical Transformation in Nursing Education Conference

Duke University School of Nursing (DUSON) and its Institute for Educational Excellence will host the 6th annual Pursuing Radical Transformation in Nursing Education Conference April 22 and 23. This year’s theme is “Active Learning and Engaging Teaching.”

The event’s keynote speaker is Dr. Richard Felder, PhD. He is the Hoechst Celanese Professor of Chemical Engineering at North Carolina State University and regularly presents workshops on effective college teaching around the world. Felder is widely published and has received awards for teaching and pedagogical scholarship. In addition to Felder’s keynote presentation, he will also present during the concurrent session on “Extending the Dialogue on Active Learning & Engaging Teaching.”

Conference attendees will learn active learning strategies that can enhance learning, ways to overcome barriers to active learning and engaging teaching, and cues educators can use to determine if learners are actively engaged in the learning process. The two-day conference will include numerous concurrent sessions and poster presentations where attendees will have the opportunity to learn from and dialogue with nurse educators who are implementing innovative teachings.

On day two, the plenary address will be presented by Beth Cusatis Phillips, PhD, RN, CNE, who will present on “Clinical Decision Making in Last-semester Senior Baccalaureate Nursing Students.”

A post-conference workshop entitled “Helping Nursing Students Strengthen their Writing Skills” is being offered for a small additional fee. The workshop is designed to engage participants in a discussion of designing, giving feedback on, and grading writing assignments.
