"I am pleased to nominate Danett Cantey for the Commitment to Excellence Award. Recently, I was unexpectedly called away from work and unable to finish planning and coordinating the last of our summer simulation experiences with ABSN students in the Geriatric Nursing course. When I spoke to Danett on the phone, she assured me that she would handle all details and simply told me not to worry about it. With her professional work ethic and dedication, Danett went above and beyond for the sake of our students. This included working through the weekend, ensuring that all instructors were prepared and ready for their simulation experiences, despite my absence. Student learning was not impacted and the day was a success. I am so grateful to work with a colleague like Danett who is willing to support a colleague at a time of need and who consistently demonstrates excellence." ~ Jill Brennan-Cook

"I would like to nominate Julie Cusatis, senior program manager, for a DUSON commitment to excellence award. Over the last two months, Julie has successfully deployed 3 groups of ABSN students and 4 MSN students on a global clinical immersion experiences.  In addition to her usual attention to detail, she also managed several unusual occurrences  making the deployments/returns complicated.  For example, one day prior to students leaving for a GCIE in Nicaragua, she was notified that the country had changed immigration requirements effective immediately.  As a result, she worked with Duke resources and the in-country partner to navigate the new requirements while also managing keeping the students updated. Similarly, she also needed to navigate a group’s return to the US which was scheduled via Houston when Hurricane Harvey was causing upheaval.  Being proactive, she explored all options and presented a thoughtful set of recommendations on how to proceed allowing the students to return to the States without difficulty.  During the orientation activities for the international Exploring Global Patterns of Health and Illness summer 2017 program, Julie designed an orientation program grounded in team building and cultural respect that established the foundation for significant intercultural learning by the participants." ~ Michael Relf

"I would like to nominate Kimberly Jackson for the DUSON Commitment to Excellence Award. Over the course of the past month, OGACHI has been bustling to achieve our vision of bringing the world to DUSON and taking DUSON to the world. In addition to deploying 25 students (3 MSN, 22 ABSN) and 3 clinical instructors on global clinical immersion experiences to Barbados, Tanzania and Nicaragua; we welcomed 24 International undergraduate Students and 3 faculty to DUSON and delivered the innovative 2-week course NUR 555 Exploring Global Patterns of Health and Illness; we welcomed and oriented a new Visiting Scholar from China, we conducted an International Visiting Scholar Colloquia on the Evidence Implementation in Nursing Practice in China, and we provided ongoing support services to 6 Visiting Scholars from 3 different countries (South Korea, China and Egypt). Although each member of the OGACHI team plays a vital role in accomplishing the important work of our office, this month in particular, Kimberly emerged as a super star.  Ms. Jackson supports all of the activities of our office and due to an unexpected illness within the team, she willingly stepped up to take on new responsibilities, fill gaps, and support the multiple priorities of our office while continuing to serve our internal and external clients in a myriad of ways.  I not only appreciate her hard work and dedication, but her warmth, and hospitality is icing on the cake.  Ms. Jackson deserves this award because she demonstrates excellence, provides superb and high quality customer service, and most of all, during an exceptionally busy time, she provided significant and exceptional support to the work of the OGACHI office.  Put quite simply, I/we could not have accomplished our deliverables this month without Kimberly Jackson!" ~ Julie Cusatis

"I nominate Ms. Kimberly Jackson for stepping up to the plate to handle all of the remaining logistics for our summer program, NURS555 Exploring Global Patterns of Health and Illness. I was unexpectedly hospitalized at the start of the program this year.  Kimberly had to step in and handle all of the daily and ongoing logistics relative to the program, including collecting and uploading presentations; contacting guest professors; creating certificates of completion, and working with vendors (caterer, transportation, etc.). Kimberly is an integral part of the NURS555 preparation process. She researchers caterers, vendors, places the orders for all of our needs, preps the bags and tent cards for the students and processes all expenditures associated with the program. Not only did Kimberly handle NURS555 during my hospitalization, but during that time I had an incoming visiting scholar, an outgoing visiting scholar, and a scholar scheduled to present a colloquium.  Again, Ms. Jackson conducted the day-long onboarding for the arriving scholar, handled the exit process for the outgoing scholar, and managed the colloquium and all of the logistics pertaining to that event. We could not do what we do without her support!" ~ Belinda Wisdom

"I would like to nominate Carla Nichols and the entire IT staff for a Commitment to Excellence Award.  We had 27 international students and faculty chaperones whose laptops had to be set up in a very short window.  Our IT staff rose to the occasion to set up all of the laptops, assist with VPNs and Multi-factor Authentications, and addressing any and all concerns from our international guests. While they conducted themselves in a professional manner, they were quite welcoming to our guests and made them feel at home. We appreciate the continued support of the IT staff not only with this program, but also with their continued support with our visiting scholars program."     ~ Belinda Wisdom

"I would like to nominate Nicholas McNeill for a “Commitment to Excellence” award. Nick has not been at DUSON for long but has managed to make a HUGE positive impression. He managed the Financial Aid Office’s recent computer issues with the utmost care. We needed new monitors because of the PeopleSoft upgrade. He went to great lengths to locate those and install them. Then our computers could not support the new monitors and he had to locate new computers which was quite challenging. He has in-depth technical knowledge, as well as, wit and charm when dealing with his customers. I give him an A+ for maintaining his sanity during this situation in our office and for helping us maintain ours. He came by every day for a week after the installation to make sure everything was working properly. We found out that our office is at the top of the list when it comes to functionality and we really appreciate the VIP treatment Nick provided. Keep it up, Nick!" ~Suzie Watson
