Celebrating Student, Faculty and Staff Excellence

The School of Nursing recently celebrated the excellence of students, faculty and staff during its annual Awards Ceremony. Award winners were:

David Jackson received the Sigma Theta Tau International Beta Epsilon Chapter Ruby Wilson Award for clearly demonstrating clinical excellence and leadership as a student in the ABSN program. Caitlin Ryan received the Sigma Theta Tau International Beta Epsilon Chapter Thelma Ingles Award in recognition of clinical experience and scholarly activities as a student in the MSN program. Mary Champagne received the Sigma Theta Tau International Beta Epsilon Chapter Legacy Award for her sustained efforts to help others grow and develop in their nursing careers. Lisa Day received the Outstanding ABSN Faculty Award from graduating ABSN students for demonstrating the highest standard of excellence in teaching, going above and beyond in the role of an educator, and being vested in seeing each student succeed. Patera Foye-Fuller and Jayme Trocino received the Outstanding ABSN Clinical Instructor Awards from graduating ABSN students for demonstrating the highest standard of excellence in teaching, going above and beyond in the role of educators, and being vested in seeing each student succeed. Anne Derouin received the Outstanding MSN Faculty Award from graduating MSN students for her excellence as a teacher, mentor, and being vested in seeing each student succeed. Nancy Short received the Outstanding DNP Faculty Award from DNP students for demonstrating superior excellence and innovation in teaching and mentoring. Susan Silva received the Outstanding PhD Faculty Award from PhD students for demonstrating superior excellence and innovation in teaching and mentoring. Valerie Sabol received the Distinguished Teaching Award for demonstrating effectiveness, innovation, and collegial support in teaching at the School of Nursing. She was selected for this award from faculty member nominations. Devon Noonan received the Early Career Scientist Award for her contributions of a scientist early in her research career and showing potential to develop a sustained program of research to enhance nursing science and practice. Elizabeth Rende received the Faculty Clinical Practice Excellence Award for her outstanding clinical practice contributions of regular rank faculty. Marilyn Hockenberry received the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame Award from Sigma Theta Tau International for achieving significant and sustained broad national and/or international recognition for her work and research that has impacted the profession and the people served. Erin Downey received the Outstanding DNP Scholarly Project Award for her project that best describes the development, implementation, and evaluation of a practice change that addresses a significant health care problem in an organization and holds potential for adoption by other agencies. Courtney Caiola received the Distinguished Dissertation Award for her innovative and significant research that demonstrates methodological and substantive quality. Natalie Krohl received the Annie Beery Bieber Award for Outstanding Leadership for providing extraordinary leadership within the School through advocacy for improvements in intellectual life or the quality of life as a community. Eugenia Gil and Lauren Thayer received the Bonnie Jones Friedman Humanitarian Award for service contributions that echoed Dr. Friedman's dedication to the highest standards of patient care and service to the vulnerable as master's students. Dr. Friedman is a family nurse practitioner known for her superb accomplishments in teaching. Tina Johnson  and Tia Troy received the Dean's Staff Excellence Awards for consistently demonstrating the highest level of commitment and excellence in the performance of their responsibilities and service to the School. Julie Cusatis received the Duke University Presidential Award in Diversity from President Richard Brodhead for her contributions in improving diversity at Duke and in the community. Crystal Arthur received the Leadership Award for being open-minded, resourceful, enthusiastic, respectful, a good communicator, flexible, proactive and demonstrating her investment in the School's goals and success. Raymond Brisson received the Community and Collaboration Award for influencing others in working in support of the great School mission while collaborating across School departments, programs, divisions, and the Duke community to positively influence others. Bebe Mills received the Peer to Peer Award  for fostering a sense of community, serving as a positive influence and going above and beyond to actively engage in creating outstanding levels of service to other staff members within the School. Eric Bloomer received the Outstanding Service to Students Award for going above and beyond to assist the School's students and exemplifying consistent support and dedication to the education, scholarship, and success of student educational and personal growth.
