DUSON Delegation Travels to China for Scholarly Exchanges, Collaborations in Education and Research

A delegation of faculty from Duke University School of Nursing (DUSON) will travel to China June 5-15 to participate in scholarly and cultural exchanges and to explore opportunities for educational exchange and research collaborations with top-tier Chinese educational and health care institutions.

The delegation’s itinerary includes stops in Beijing, Shanghai, Kunshan, and Wuhan and meetings with representatives from Fudan University, Southeast University, Fudan Pediatric Hospital, Huadong Hospital, Kunshan city government, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Duke-Kunshan University, Wuhan University, Peking Union Medical Center, and Peking University.

Duke faculty members will be presenting scientific papers at the 2012 Beijing International Nursing Conference, which is being co-sponsored by Duke University School of Nursing and hosted by Peking Union Medical College School of Nursing and the Nursing Department of Peking Union Medical College Hospital. Catherine L. Gilliss, DNSc, RN, FAAN, dean of the Duke University School of Nursing, Helene Fuld Health Trust Professor of Nursing, and vice chancellor for nursing affairs at Duke University, will deliver a conference keynote address entitled "Leading into the Future through Nursing Science."

Duke faculty presentations at the Beijing conference will include "Connect for Quality in Nursing Homes: A Study to Reduce Patient Falls" by Ruth Anderson, PhD, MSN, MA, RN, FAAN; "Findings from the Adherence eValuation After Ischemic stroke-Longitudinal (AVAIL) Study" by Janet Prvu Bettger, ScD, FAHA; "Psychological Distress Patterns in Mothers of Preterm Infants" by Diane Holditch-Davis, PhD, RN, FAAN; "Light College Smokers Reactions to Genetic Susceptibility Testing for Nicotine Addiction: A Pilot Trial” by Isaac Lipkus, PhD; “Implementation of Evidence-Based Care for Older Adults: Implications of an Innovative Teaching Model for Strengthening Dementia Care" by Eleanor McConnell, PhD, MSN, RN, GCNS, BC; "The Application of Community-Based Participatory Processes in the Development of a Comprehensive Community-Based Framework for the Care of a Growing Elderly Population in the Caribbean" by Dorothy Powell, EdD, RN, FAAN; and "Developing Interventions to Preserve Cognitive Health for Persons with Mild Cognitive Impairment" by Bei Wu, PhD.

In Shanghai, Duke faculty will attend and present research findings at the 2012 Sino-US Long-Term Care Forum sponsored by the Fudan University School of Nursing and the Huadong Hospital. Dean Catherine L. Gilliss will deliver the keynote address at the Forum. The title of her presentation is “Innovations in Long-Term Care: A Leadership Challenge."
