DUSON Interim Vice Dean Gets Inducted into the NC Nurses Association Hall of Fame

The Duke University School of Nursing (DUSON) Interim Vice Dean Ernest Grant, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, was recently inducted into the North Carolina Nurses Association (NCNA) during the 116th annual convention.

According to NCNA, the organization was founded in 1902, and is a leading professional organization for North Carolina's registered nurses, they equip nurses to thrive in an ever-changing healthcare environment providing members with continuing education, networking, and legislative advocacy. Grant said he was excited to be inducted into the NCNA Hall of Fame, as noted in the official NCNA press release. "We've worked as a team to ensure the best possible outcomes for the profession and the nurses of North Carolina,” Grant said.

Grant was inducted based on his more than 40 years in the nursing field where he has made a significant impact. As a clinician, he is an internationally recognized burn-care and fire-safety expert. Grant previously served as the burn outreach coordinator for the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. In 2002, President George W. Bush presented Grant with a Nurse of the Year Award for his work treating burn victims from the World Trade Center site.

Additionally, he was recognized for four years in a row by Modern Healthcare Magazine as one of the 50 Influential Clinical Executives in Healthcare and as one of the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare. In 2011, he was inducted as a fellow into the American Academy of Nursing, and was a past president of NCNA and immediate past president of the American Nurses Association.

Grant currently serves as the interim vice dean for Diversity, Equity, and inclusion, where he develops initiatives that will enhance the experience of underrepresented and/or disadvantaged students enrolled in DUSON. He is also designing and proposing strategies and processes to integrate diversity and inclusion best practices within DUSON's current organizational framework, with an emphasis on both internal and external initiatives. He is also co-chair of the North Carolina Institute of Medicine's Task Force on the Future of the Nursing Workforce.
