Alison Edie, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, assistant professor for Duke University School of Nursing (DUSON), has been selected to be the lead faculty of the School's Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Program's Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) major.

Edie began her career at DUSON in 2006 as a part-time clinical instructor for the MSN program and became a full-time faculty member in 2012. During her time at DUSON, she has taught a variety of courses such as Managing Acute and Chronic Health Problems, Diagnostic Reasoning and Physical Assessment, Sexual and Reproductive Health, and Gender and Women’s Health Issues.

Her current clinical practice is at the Durham County Health Department Women’s Health Clinic, and she has extensive experience in the primary care of underserved populations. Edie’s research interest focuses on understanding the issues and concerns of vulnerable populations with a focus on self-efficacy and health promotion practices of women and adolescents. Keeping in line with her scholarly interests, she is active in community organizations that provide support to homeless families, and she currently serves on the Board of Directors and chairs the Program Committee for Families Moving Forward.

Edie is also vice president and delegate for the Beta Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) and is a 2014-2015 STTI Nurse Faculty Leadership Academy Scholar.

“I am very excited that Dr. Edie will bring her extensive experience in primary care delivery for underserved populations to her leadership role,” said Michael E. Zychowicz, DNP, ANP, ONP, FAANC, FAAN, professor and director of DUSON’s MSN Program. “Dr. Edie’s experience as a STTI Nurse Faculty Leadership Academy Scholar will serve her well in her new role.”

Edie earned her BSN from the Medical College of Georgia School of Nursing in 1984 and her MSN from Vanderbilt University School of Nursing in 1991. She completed her DNP at Georgia Southern University School of Nursing in 2012.

She follows Katherine Pereira, DNP, RN, FNP-BC, ADM-BC, FAAN, FAANP, who was recently appointed as DUSON’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program director.

The Family Nurse Practitioner major at DUSON focuses on developing the knowledge and skills necessary to deliver nursing care to persons of all ages across primary care settings, including those in rural and under-served areas. The program rose to No. 2 in U.S. News and World Report rankings this year.
