Duke University School of Nursing (DUSON) and its Institute for Educational Excellence will host the fourth annual Pursuing Radical Transformation in Nursing Education Conference November 2 and 3. The sub-theme for this year’s gathering is "Preparing Faculty for the Challenge."

Dr. Stephen Brookfield, an internationally known education scholar and author of 15 books on adult learning, teaching, critical thinking, discussion methods, and critical theory, will deliver the keynote presentation. He will also engage in dialogue with smaller groups of conference participants about what it means to be a “skillful teacher” and how individuals and groups of faculty can transform their educational environments. Dr. Brookfield will be available to sign copies of his books during the lunch break.

According to Dr. Terry Valiga, director of DUSON’s Institute for Educational Excellence and the conference’s coordinator, the event is intended to help participants gain a better understanding of the knowledge, skills, and values essential for nurse educators to create transformative learning environments. The conference will incorporate a number of breakout sessions for extended dialogue with exceptional teachers who are transforming nursing education. Topics will include identity formation as a nurse educator, learning in the affective domain, engaging in the scholarship of teaching, and effective and innovative uses of technology.

Duke presenters at the event, in addition to Dr. Valiga, are Dr. Rita-Marie Conrad, Dr. Helen Gordon, Professor Beth Phillips, and Dr. Terry Ward. Other presenters include Dr. Marilyn Oermann, Professor Nancy Hartel, and Professor Karen Pardue, who will deliver the plenary address on interprofessional education. A post-conference workshop designed to help participants develop a tool box of strategies that will help students make connections as they learn is being offered this year for a small additional fee. A minimum registration of 10 is required to offer the workshop, and enrollment will be limited to 25.
