Nurse Anesthesia Program Celebrates Excellence

The School of Nursing Nurse Anesthesia program recently celebrated students, faculty and community partners during its annual awards ceremony.

Award winners were:

  • Naval Hospital Camp LejeuneDuke Regional Hospital and VA of Asheville won the Clinical Site of the Year Award.
  • Richard "Daniel" Runkle III, MD, Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology for Duke School of Medicine and anesthesiologist for Duke Regional Hospital, won the Anesthesiologist of the Year Award.
  • Seven certified registered nurse anesthetists won the Preceptors of the Year Award:
    • Robert ArbeeneJohn Daniels and Joseph McVicker with Camp Lejeune.
    • Susan Bazemore with VA of Asheville
    • Brad Dean with Duke EP Lab
    • Carrie Kaylos with Duke School of Medicine
    • Shannon Lamb with Durham Regional
  • Sharon Hawks won the Faculty of the Year Award.
  • Student Andrew Chamkasem won the Agatha Hodgins Award for Outstanding Accomplishment. This award, established in 1975, recognizes individuals whose foremost dedication to excellence has furthered the art and science of nurse anesthesia. 
  • Student Lindsey Davis Diskin won the DUNAP Faculty Excellence Award. This award, established in 2011 by nurse anesthesia faculty, recognizes a graduating student who has demonstrated outstanding accomplishments and exceptional scholastic achievements. The award is designed to honor the student who consistently displays the highest levels of leadership and professionalism as well as excellence in both academic and clinical performance in the pursuit of the DUNAP academic and professional goals.
  • Student Kyle Smith won the DUNAP Humanitarian Award. This award, established in 2011 by nurse anesthesia faculty, recognizes a graduating student who demonstrates service to others within and outside the DUSON community. This student volunteers time without expecting or receiving payback and there is sacrifice involved, whether it is time, money or impact on other aspects of the student's life.
  • Student Stephanie Brogdon won the DUNAP Leadership Award. This award, established in 2011 by nurse anesthesia faculty, recognizes a graduating student who demonstrates outstanding leadership within the nurse anesthesia program and the profession by participating in health care and patient advocacy. This student also advocates for improvements in the intellectual or community life.
