Schneider Assumes Presidential Role with Oncology Nursing Society

Susan Schneider, PhD, RN, AOCN, FAAN, associate professor and faculty lead for the graduate oncology specialty at Duke University School of Nursing (DUSON), assumed the role of president of the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) effective in April for a two-year term. Schneider was elected as president-elect last year for a one-year team.

“I became a part of ONS as a new nurse more than 31 years ago, and it has been a consistent force behind me as I’ve grown in my career,” said Schneider. “I am committed to our mission to advance oncology nursing and quality care.”

ONS is a 39,000 member society that includes more than 225 local chapters and advocates for oncology nurses at the national level.

Schneider’s presidential platform is “Specialized Knowledge Quality Care.” Her platform will focus on learning, leadership development, mentorship and clinical resources. “As oncology care continues to change, so must the educational and professional development opportunities continue to expand,” she said. “My platform will focus on the specialized education oncology nurses need to continue to improve the quality of care for our patients.”

Schneider has extensive experience in pediatric and adult oncology nursing. She holds certification as a clinical nurse specialist and as an advanced oncology certified nurse. Her research interests include management of symptom distress in cancer patients, the use of distraction interventions to enhance coping and the use of tailored protocols to promote chemotherapy adherence.

Schneider has chaired the American Cancer Society Peer Review Committee on Scholarships and Professorships in Oncology Nursing. She has received both the Excellence in Cancer Nursing Research and Excellence in Cancer Nursing Education awards from ONS. She is also a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.
