The Academy for Academic and Social Enrichment and Leadership Development for Health Equity II
Cultivating nurse leaders committed to health equity for all people
The Duke University School of Nursing Academy for Academic and Social Enrichment and Leadership Development for Health Equity II (Health Equity Academy II) is a competitive academic and professional socialization program for students interested in a career in nursing who aspire to leadership in the profession and advanced levels of graduate education. The Health Equity Academy (HEA II), funded by Health Resources and Services Administration Nursing Workforce Diversity grant D19HP30844, focuses on social determinants of health (SDH), health access, health disparities, diversity, and health equity in the preparation of HEA II Scholars destined to become the next generation of minority nurse leaders.
Benefits of HEA II
HEA II Scholars participating in the Pre-entry Immersion in Nursing (PIN) program benefit in a variety of ways:
- Receive a stipend to live on campus and work with Duke faculty
- Gain exposure to an array of leaders and nursing careers
- Expand understanding of health equity concepts
- Academic advising and career counseling
- Networking, mentoring and social supports
- Personal and professional development
Once matriculated into the Duke Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program, the Health Equity Academy Scholars will:
- Receive a variety of academic and social supports
- Participate in tutoring and study groups
- Receive scholarship and need based stipend support
- Have an opportunity to participate in a multitude of socialization and academic experiences

- Pay the $50 ABSN application fee
Our Mentoring to Increase Access to Health Professions (MAP), a component of the Health Equity Academy II, is a program to immerse undergraduate students into the professional nursing environment and is designed to provide ongoing mentorship to facilitate students' integration and completion of a health profession program.
