Prior to pursuing a nursing career, I worked in the banking industry. My experience working with people from all walks of life, coupled with my outgoing personality, is what led me to pursue nursing. Nursing is perfect for me as I can connect with people and positively impact their lives. A nursing career will also give me the flexibility and opportunity to spend more time with my family.

As a mother of two children, I face the challenge of balancing my home life with school. As I shared my concerns with faculty, I was astonished by how supportive they were. I had the wonderful opportunity to connect with other moms in the program and even serve as a mentor to a first-semester new mom. My professors and clinical instructors were also supportive when it came to me attending my children’s school recitals and milestones.

Starting the ABSN program, I thought I only wanted to be a nurse. Now, I want to do so much more. I want to change my community and the world, one patient at a time—through empathy, compassionate care and advocacy.

Earning my degree from Duke prepares me to be confident in my abilities and knowledge base and to remain curious and not be afraid to challenge the status quo. My degree will also prepare me to move into leadership regardless of whether I stay by the bedside or pursue an advanced degree.
