From Dean Catherine Gilliss: May is a great time to be at Duke University School of Nursing

May 6 marked the beginning of National Nurses Week 2012, and many activities are happening to celebrate Duke Nurses. The theme for the week is Duke Nursing is Living Duke Values through Professional Nursing Practice, and details are available on the National Nurses Week page of the Friends of Nursing Intranet site. Of note is the Nursing Grand Rounds "Living a Professional Practice Model" on Tuesday, May 8, from 5:45 PM to 6:45 PM in Duke North Room 2003 and Thursday, May 10, from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM in Duke North Room 2001.

If you haven’t already emailed your RSVP to Sherene Jenkins for the 2012 DUSON Awards Ceremony and Reception, please do so today. The festivities are set for Friday, May 11, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. We will present faculty and student awards in Pearson 1014 (the auditorium) and gather afterward in the café atrium for food and fellowship. I encourage you to attend and look forward to seeing you there.

Duke University’s 160th Commencement is Sunday, May 13. Fareed Zakaria, a CNN anchor, TIME magazine editor-at-large, and Washington Post columnist, will deliver the commencement address. Commencement exercises begin at 10:00 AM at Wallace Wade Stadium and are open to the public. Instructions are available for faculty and administrators who plan to participate in the academic procession.

The School of Nursing Reception is taking place 11:30 AM to 12: 30 PM on Duke Quad. The School of Nursing Hooding and Recognition Ceremony begins at 1:00 PM in Page Auditorium. Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN, chief executive officer of the National League for Nursing, is our guest speaker.
