Cristina Hendrix and team submitted an American Nurses Foundation application entitled "Helping Those Who Help: Exploring the Needs of Informal Caregivers in Caring for Older Adults After Hospital Discharge" requesting funding for a one-year period with a start date of September 1, 2012.
In 2009, 13% of Americans were aged 65 and older, yet, they accounted for 43% of hospital days. Hospitalized older adults are vulnerable to difficult home recovery because of co‐morbidities and functional limitations often worsened by their hospitalization. Many rely on their informal caregivers for assistance during their home convalescence period. However, best practices to prepare caregivers for their home caregiving role remain unclear. To date, no data is available on the needs of caregivers for post‐discharge care.
The specific aims of this study are to explore the needs of informal caregivers in caring for older adults after hospital discharge and describe caregiving issues that are commonly experienced within the first week of hospital discharge.
