Mitigating the Madness

Since 2017, DUHS, in partnership with DUSON, has offered this 3-part evidence-based practice (EBP) series, which includes hands-on courses and mentorship for (1) Approaches to Clinical Inquiry, (2) Approaches to Project Development and Implementation, and (3) Approaches to Dissemination. Additionally, in 2021, the inaugural cohort of EBP Fellows were selected to participate in a 12-month mentorship in which nurses and other healthcare disciplines develop a project related to the strategic plan of DUHS. ABSN Perioperative elective

As the perioperative workforce begins to enter retirement age, there was an identified need to develop a pipeline for new graduate nurses to enter into this specialty. Working with the partnership, two electives were developed that are taught by a DUSON faculty member and perioperative experts from DUHS. Since Fall 2017, perioperative electives have been offered for third and fourth semester ABSN students. Over 150 students have taken the electives since its inception, with several going on to work in the perioperative arena after graduation.

Duke Nurse Extern (DNE) Program

Beginning in 2017, DUSON ABSN students have had the opportunity to participate in the Duke Nurse Extern PNA program. Students are paired with a float pool nurse and must complete 72-80 clinical hours during the DNE program. After completion, they have the option of staying on as a part-time float pool PNA. Approximately 10-15 students participate in this program each year. Focus groups with students who participated in the DNE program highlighted that the experience increased their confidence in the clinical setting and improved knowledge.

Patient Service Aid Role

Duke to the needs of the health system from the COVID-19 pandemic, DUSON students were able to serve in Patient Service Aid (PSA) roles. In these roles, they were symptom screeners and PPE observers. After symptom screeners and PPE observers were no longer needed, this role was maintained, with students offering assistance to the inpatient units. Over 30 students have participated in this role.

Duke University Health System Named NLN Center of Excellence in Nursing Education

COE Badge

COE Program Awards Four-Year Designation for Creating Workplace Environments That Promote the Academic Progression of Nurses

Duke University Health System (DUHS) Nursing earned the National League of Nursing’s (NLN) prestigious designation as a Center of Excellence in Nursing Education™ for the years 2016-2021.

Schools of nursing apply for Center of Excellence (COE) status based on demonstrated and sustained excellence in faculty development, nursing education research, or student learning and professional development. DUHS is the first health care organization in North Carolina to receive the designation.

“It is a great honor to be considered a role model nationally for nursing leadership, for creating an environment where academic and professional development for every nurse is valued,” said Mary Ann Fuchs, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, Vice President of Patient Care & System Chief Nurse Executive, DUHS; and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Duke University School of Nursing (DUSON). “Our investments in professional development programs for nurses throughout our health system demonstrate our ongoing commitment to academic progression, and to improving patient care and outcomes through excellence and innovation.”

“The COE designation is an exemplar of the excellence of nursing education in practice at Duke Health System. It is also an important collaborative effort between DUHS Nursing and DUSON nurse educators and academic partners – one of the first major initiatives from an exciting new partnership between DUHS Nursing and DUSON, which leveraged the strengths of nurses across Duke,” said Marion E. Broome, PhD, RN, FAAN, Dean and Ruby Wilson Professor of Nursing, Duke University School of Nursing; Vice Chancellor for Nursing Affairs, Duke University; and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs for Nursing, DUHS.

DUHS is one of 15 organizations that achieved COE designation in 2016.

Career Development Expo | June 7 - 8, 2016

“Knowledge Is Power!”

DUSON-Career Development Expo

Our Career Development Expo held at the Duke University School of Nursing in early June was a great success, with over 180 Duke University Health System (DUHS) nurses in attendance. I was very pleased with the participation from nurses at all levels who are exploring the possibility of furthering their education.

Seventeen North Carolina schools of nursing attended the expo, offering resources and information about BSN, MSN, CRNA, DNP and PhD degree programs. One of the highlights of the event was a panel of DUHS nurses who received degrees while working, raising families, managing households and encountering various obstacles along the way. The stories our nurses shared with the group emphasized that it will never be a good time to start a new chapter in your education, but it’s never too late – the secret is simply to make a commitment and dive in!

Addressing the Expo participants, Kevin Sowers, MSN, RN, FAAN, Duke Hospital president, pointed out that health care reform will bring new opportunities for nursing careers, changes to the industry, and shortages in many different practice areas over the next 20 years. Kevin shared his strong belief that “knowledge is power” as we work to become better leaders and have a positive impact on the changing health care landscape.
