Current Research
Project Reach
Project Reach is NCI funded Alliance cooperative group clinical trial focused on implementing smoking cessation interventions for rural cancer survivors. This study is currently open at 150 Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) sites. The primary aim of the study is to evaluate the efficacy of an eight-week text-based SGR intervention (a personalized eight-week reduction schedule paired with National Cancer Institutes (NCI’s) Smokefree.TXT) compared to a control intervention (NCI Clearing the Air Cessation Booklet) on biochemically-validated smoking cessation six-month post-quit date in rural cancer survivors.
Smokeless Tobacco Cessation Intervention for Firefighters
The investigators are asking professional firefighters across North Carolina to take part in focus groups to discuss the specific needs of firefighters in smokeless tobacco cessation. About 40 firefighters will take part in the focus groups.
The purpose of the focus groups is to learn how firefighting and shift work impact smokeless tobacco use and risk perceptions related to chew or dip. The cessation program will be a mobile text / chat intervention specifically tailored to needs of firefighters who wish to stop using smokeless tobacco.
DeStress for Health Study
The purpose of this research study is to determine whether a positive psychology intervention paired with a health behavior intervention is successful in decreasing perceived stress and increasing positive affect in residents of Vance and Granville County. The program will consist of 4 in person / zoom sessions that are based on empirically supported PPWB components including Optimism, Gratitude, Mindfulness and Positive Savoring to improve behavioral self-regulation towards health-related goals with an additional class five as a check in that will be used for survey completion. Specifically, we will provide participants with instruction on positive psychology exercises that can do on their own and counseling around increased fruit and vegetable intake, physical activity and smoking cessation. Participants will then be asked to create a SMART goal to work on each week of the program for one of the behaviors.
A Text-based Reduction Intervention for Smokeless Tobacco Cessation - #EnufSnuf
The purpose of this randomized controlled trial is to evaluate the efficacy of an SGR intervention compared to a usual care control condition in promoting smokeless tobacco cessation in rural and/or medically underserved users. The SGR group (N=250) will receive a reduction program that includes a text-based personalized reduction plan and daily text-based, cessation support messages. The control group (N=250) will receive the Enough Snuff Intervention, including a smokeless tobacco cessation booklet and up to 10-weeks of bi-weekly motivational text-messages. The primary outcome will be self-reported smokeless tobacco cessation 6 months post-intervention completion.
