The Health Innovation Lab (HIL) is located in the Duke University School of Nursing and directly adjacent to Duke University Hospital. The HIL helps to advance the role of nursing in the transformation of healthcare innovation. We offer creators a 20,000+ square-foot state of the art laboratory, classroom and simulation space.

The HIL provides infrastructure for evaluating medical devices, digital health technologies, and care delivery models for patient care. The lab serves as a pipeline to translate innovative ideas, processes, and technologies into clinical practice.

Medical Devices

EasyShift™ is a device that repositions immobile patients in acute and long-term care. It is designed to improve caregiver productivity, reduce caregiver back strain, and reduce life-threatening patient complications.

Digital Health

EXTEND is a NIH-funded study at Duke Health System to help adults who have difficulty managing their type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. The goal is to improve their health through the use of technology and monitoring.

Care Delivery Models

The Duke Elder Family/Caregiver Training Center was created to train, educate and support caregivers during hospital to home transitions. This academic-clinical-community model is a novel care delivery process that can be integrated into health system workflows. DEFT utilizes students from the MSN and ABSN programs at DUSON.
