IPEC Announces 2021-2022 Grant Recipients

The Duke Health Interprofessional Education and Care Center (IPEC) is pleased to announce the 2021-2022 grant recipients. Each grant was evaluated based on its development of interprofessional learning experiences for students that address the IPEC priorities including justice, diversity, equity, inclusion, well-being, and community engagement.

Iwama Joins IPEC as Assistant Director for the Occupational Therapy ProgramMichael Iwama

The Duke Health Interprofessional Education and Care Center (IPEC) is pleased to announce that Michael Iwama, PhD, MSc, BScHP, BScOT, is the newest member of the team. Dr. Iwama will serve as the Assistant Director for the Occupational Therapy program. In his role, Dr. Iwama will act as Professor, and Chief Program Strategist for the Occupational Therapy Doctorate Division.

Before joining the IPEC team, Dr. Iwama served as the Dean of the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, and Professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy at MGH Institute of Health Professions. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Michael Iwama to the IPEC team!

Aleah HarrisHarris Joins IPEC as Administrative Lead

The Duke Health Interprofessional Education and Care Center (IPEC) is pleased to announce that Aleah B. Harris will be joining the team as the new Administrative Lead for the center. In her position, Aleah will be responsible for providing administrative and logistical support for the Center staff, faculty, and students with a particular focus on IPEC sponsored educational event and initiatives.

Aleah joins us from the Heart Center within the Duke Health System. She has been with the organization for five years and looks forward to advancing her career with our team. We look to continue to move our mission forward, with Aleah as our newest team member. Please join us in welcoming Aleah to the team!

Duke's Advanced Practice Provider Leadership Institute Accepting Applications Through March 14

Duke's Advanced Practice Provider Leadership Institute (APPLI) is accepting applications now through March 14, 2022, for its 12-month leadership development program for the 2022-2023 program year. This program offers advanced practice providers (APN, LCSW, PA, PT, OT and other graduate level educated/trained providers) and their interprofessional team partners a transformational opportunity to become leaders in innovative models of care, education and advocacy to achieve health equity for all.   APP-led teams of 2 or 3 members committed to working together on a quality or population health improvement project are encouraged to apply. Team projects can have a clinical, education and/or advocacy focus. If applicable for one’s profession, CE or CME contact hours can also be earned for many program activities. Applications are due March 14 with an early bird deadline of March 1 for an enrollment fee discount.

Students participating in Haunted HospitalMore than 55 Students Attended Haunted Hospital IPEC Event

The seventh annual Haunted Hospital, hosted by Duke IPEC and Duke Ahead on Thursday, Oct. 28, was a success. A total of 57 interprofessional students participated as learners in the event and represented the disciplines of nursing, medicine, physical therapy, physician assistant, occupational therapy. Students from the Divinity School also attended.

DUSON students dressed up to lead a “Stop the Bleed” station. The escape room provided an immersive experience for all learners as well with lots of challenges along the way. There were some scary sights and lots of learning with scenarios with Frankenstein, Dracula, Cameron Crazie, and even Elvis.

This year's costume winners were students Nathan Pait, Master of Biomedical Sciences student, with his scary nurse costume and Samuel Martinez, ABSN student, and Megan Clinton, Divinity student, with their themed costume from the animated film, "Kiki's Delivery Service."
The success of the event was dependent on a robust fleet of 36 volunteers including faculty, staff and students representing all the IPE programs.  A special shoutout to event supporters including Duke IPEC, Duke AHEAD, DAAMN, and DENS!

apply now graphicIPEC Center Accepting Proposals for Development of Educational Experiences for Students

Duke Health Center for Interprofessional Education and Care (IPEC) is pleased to offer grant funding for Duke faculty and affiliated health professionals engaged in education program development for students enrolled in profession specific degree programs at the Schools of Medicine and Nursing—this includes Doctor of Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy Doctorate, Physician Assistant, Doctor of Medicine, and Nursing (ABSN, MSN, DNP, PhD).
Our purpose is to support the development of programs that will provide students authentic experiences in interprofessional education and care.

For the upcoming funding cycle, IPEC is interested in ideas that demonstrate:

  • Evidence of interprofessional collaboration in project leadership and development
  • Depth and authenticity of engagement of interprofessional students
  • Quality and rigor of assessment plan (outcomes)
  • Potential for broader impacts (collateral benefits beyond study/project participants)
  • Potential for scholarship
  • Addressing IPEC priorities, including but not limited to: justice, diversity, equity and inclusion, well-being, and community engagement

Jacqueline BrownBrown Smith Joins IPEC as Assistant Director of Assessment and Evaluation

Duke AHEAD and the Duke Health Interprofessional Education and Care Center (IPEC) are pleased to announce that Jacqueline Brown Smith, EdD, MHA, MSL will join our teams in the newly created shared position of Assistant Director of Assessment and Evaluation. In her new position, Brown Smith will be responsible for the design and implementation of evaluation plans for IPEC Center sponsored interprofessional education programs and the delivery and evaluation of interprofessional faculty development programs offered through Duke AHEAD.

Brown Smith joins us from her previous role as Research Program Leader within Duke University School of Nursing. She received her Masters of Health Administration and Master of Science in Organizational Leadership from Pfeiffer University and a Doctorate of Education in Organizational Leadership from Gardner-Webb University. In addition to Brown Smith's experience in managing complex data, her experience with diversity initiatives will continue to advance the missions of both Duke AHEAD and the IPEC Center. IPEC Student Advisory Committee Member Accepted to NIH Graduate Partnership ProgramRamon Lujan

Ramon "Andy" Lujan, PhD student at Duke University School of Nursing (DUSON) and IPEC Student Advisory Committee member, is the first DUSON PhD student to have been accepted into the prestigious NIH Graduate Partnership Program. This program brings PhD students, who have completed their program coursework at their home university, into the NIH Intramural Research Program to conduct their dissertation research. Lujan, with the guidance of his mentor Julia Walker, professor for DUSON, established a collaborate relationship with Heather Hickman of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). He then applied for the program and was accepted to spend the next two years of his PhD training in Hickman's lab.

Students, Faculty Participate in Duke Moral Moments in Medicine Class

A group of 40 students and 16 faculty in the Schools of Nursing and Medicine at Duke are participating in Moral Moments in Medicine: Pandemics, Race, Social Justice, a new course hosted by the Trent Center for Bioethics, Humanities & History of Medicine in collaboration with The Purpose Project at Duke and the Center for Interprofessional Education and Care. Interprofessional Education Leaders Receive AMA Medical Education Innovation GrantDiana McNeill

Drs. Mitch Heflin, director of the Duke IPEC Center; Diana McNeil, director of Duke AHEAD; and Meg Zomordoi, assistant provost for Interprofessional Education at the University of North Carolina were awarded the 2020 American Medical Association Accelerating Change in Medical Education Innovation Grant Program for the CO TEACH Curriculum: Creating Opportunities for Telehealth Education, Assessment, and Care through Hotspotting.

The goal of the project is to develop a new curriculum for hotspotting that promotes interprofessional student learning and patient well-being through telehealth. The curriculum will provide students from Duke and UNC an opportunity to learn about telehealth skills and how to anticipate and mitigate barriers to the delivery of telehealth for underserved populations.

Applications Now Being Accepted for IPE Advanced Certificate Program

The Interprofessional Education Advanced Certificate Program, sponsored by Duke AHEAD and the Duke Health Interprofessional Education and Care (IPEC) Center, is now accepting applications. The yearlong professional development program prepares health professions educators to develop, deploy and evaluate interprofessional educational activities in the context of learning about, from, and with educators from other professions. Applications are due November 6 by 5 p.m.

Participants will incur no direct cost for participation. Each certificate program participant will receive up to 41,000 for project expenses (excluding effort support) and contingent on approval for use under current University guidelines and restrictions. For more information, visit this link.

Kathleen WaiteWaite Chosen As Interprofessional Education Champion of the Month

Kathleen Waite, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine, Duke University School of Medicine and Division of General Internal Medicine has been chosen as the Interprofessional Education Champion for the month of October by the IPEC Center. Dr. Waite has worked tirelessly with IPEC Assistant Director Erin Leiman to re-imagine how to provide meaningful clinical experiences within the physical and budgetary constraints in place due to COVID-19.

The IPE Clinic will pilot a newly developed opportunity for students to interact with patients virtually both within the emergency department and primary care clinics. The pilot will primarily target first and third year medical students and will be expanded in the Spring to bring in additional learners form the School of Nursing, the Physician Assistant Program and Physical Therapy.

hotspottingStudent Teams Serving Durham During COVID

The Center is providing funding and support for the Duke Hotspotting Initiative (DHSI) and Root Cause's Fresh Produce Program at the Duke Outpatient Clinic. These student led initiatives aim to focus on improving health maintenance for underserved members of the Durham community.

139 student volunteers from the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, the Doctor of Physical Therapy, and Physician Assistant Program (among others) are placing reassurance calls and distributing care packages with essentials for staying at home to patients in need. This grass roots initiative is meeting a vital need in the Durham community!

Education Week 2020

We want to thank everyone who participated in Education Week! We were excited by the number of faculty, staff, and providers who attended and their enthusiasm to embrace interprofessional education and practice.

President Washington and Dean Marion E. Broome kicked the week off at the Keynote address setting the tone for a series of events focused on introducing faculty and staff from across campus to the Center and the IPE mission. Visit this link to view the recording.

2020 IPEC Innovative Curriculum Grants

Principal investigator Megan Holmes, PhD; and collaborators Nicole Stringham, PhD, School of Medicine, Department of Basic Science Education; and Kim Howard, PA-C, School of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine and Community Health received a grant for their project entitled "Interprofessional Collaborative Learning in Pre-Clinical Gross Anatomy: Application of Clinical Problem-Solving to Reinforce Anatomical Knowledge and IPE Competencies."
