Why Be Involved?

Why be involved with The Duke University School of Nursing?

Your Role

The role of the preceptor is that of a professional role model, who will facilitate the students’ ability to achieve his or her learning objectives within the setting. For example, a nurse manager for students in the Nursing Administration program or a Clinical Nurse specialist for CNS students. For Nurse Practitioner students, Nurse Practitioners, Physicians or Physician Assistants may be selected who provide care in settings for which the Nurse Practitioner student is being prepared (for example primary care or acute care).

Preceptor Responsibilities

As a preceptor, you are expected to uphold the following responsibilities:

  • Familiarize self with the graduate nursing program, including the course and goals for the student experience. (Course syllabus will be provided)
  • Identify learning experiences for the student(s) (Agency, community-based or home-based)
  • Participate in the orientation of graduate student(s) at the clinical site and experience.
  • Provide inputs for determining student goals.
  • Hold conferences with the student(s) as necessary to assess progress and determine needs.
  • Provide assistance and supervision for student(s) learning activities.
  • Confer with faculty regarding the student’s progress (minimally, at midterm, and final periods with documentation, and on as-needed bases).
  • Communicate suggestions, problems, or concerns to the faculty, as appropriate;
  • Provide input to faculty and students for final evaluations. The final course grade is the responsibility of the faculty.
  • Review the clinical skills of Nurse Practitioner student(s) to assess learning needs, and skills at the beginning of preceptorship, as well as periodically throughout the clinical rotation.
  • Provide guidance and validation in assessment, problem identification, and management plan using clinical reasoning.
  • Guide the student in synthesizing theoretical knowledge and data collection to design/evaluate a patient-centered therapeutic plan.
