"10 Questions with..." Gets To Know a Colleague in the Dean's Office

Welcome to another issue of "10 Questions with...," where we will learn more about our colleagues who make DUSON the destination for outstanding talent.

Erika BurgosLet's get to know Erika Burgos, administrative assistant, who has been with DUSON for one year.

Q: What's the best advice you've ever received?
A: "Life is about choices" is the best advice I have ever received from my dear father. This piece of advice really made me become aware of the power I have through the choices I make.

Q: What inspires you working at Duke?
A: My inspiration for working at Duke is to further my professional development and increase my network, as well as having the opportunity to work with so many talented and kind-hearted people.

Q: What past work experience did you have that helped prepare you for DUSON?
A: My past work experience that helped me most in preparing me for my role at DUSON was supporting the Senior Vice President of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. In my role at St. Jude, I learned the importance of people and relationship building, how to manage a complex calendar schedule, and how to interact with senior leadership and executives.

Q:What three words would you use to describe DUSON?
A: Hospitable, Collaborative, Friendly

Q: How do you balance career and outside life?
A: I am a strong believer of work life balance. I create this balance by using my eight hours at work wisely to complete my work so there is no need to take work home or stay later. I also practice mindfulness where I do not take what is happening at home to work or what is happening at work to home.

Q: What was your first job?
A: My first job was working as a Human Resources Assistant at Caldwell University. This was a work study position.

Q: What music is on your playlist?
A: I love variety when it comes to music. I have everything from classical music, hip hop and R&B, rock, HZ frequency healing music, shamanic drumming, rap, salsa, reggae, and even music from the 60s and 70s. I truly appreciate the diversity of music we have accessible.

Q: What would you do (for a career) if you weren't doing this?
A: My dream career, which I am currently working on, is to be a published author, life coach, and motivational speaker. I am currently writing my book, taking life coach and mindfulness certification classes, and receiving mentoring for public speaking.

Q: If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?
A: That is a tough question because there are so many people I can think of, but I would have to narrow down a dinner with Socrates, Nikola Tesla, Dr. Sebi, Anita Moorjani, Wayne Dyer, Lao Tzu, Ghandi, and Gregg Braden. I would love to pick their brains!

Q: What is something that most people don't know about you?
A: I think that what most people don't know about me is that I am a complete science and philosophy nerd and I love to think about the possibilities of our existence through both of these subjects. I love studying the power of the mind, the mystery of our origin, and cryptography.

Thanks for sharing more about yourself Erika!
