Blodgett, Howard Submit Proposal on Educating Faculty on Racism, Bias

valerie howardnikki blogettKudos to Nikki Blodgett, director of the Center for Nursing Discovery, and Valerie Howard, vice dean of Academic Affairs, and their entire team for the submission of their Duke Faculty Advancement Seed Grant application entitled: “Educating Upstanders: Faculty Against Racism and Bias in Nursing.” This proposal requests funding for a one-year period with a start date of March 1, 2021.

The purpose of this project is to develop and implement evidence-based simulation, incorporating trigger films, for educating nursing faculty to confront racism and bias. In order to educate faculty, the team will consult with experts to explore best practices in racial and social justice simulation to develop up to three simulation scripts, scenarios, and a standardized training manual. The team will create trigger films, or short videos that simulate racism and bias occurring, with professional actors. Then, will implement our standardized education to confront racism and bias for two small groups of DUSON faculty. At the conclusion of this pilot, the team will evaluate the effectiveness of the simulation and faculty experience to develop a further plan for on-going faculty education activities to confront racism and bias.
