Community Service Volunteer Opportunities

  • Carrboro Compost Collection call for volunteers! The food waste drop-off program at the Carrboro Farmers Market continues to be a big hit locally, drawing regional attention as a model for other locales!  It is almost entirely supported by volunteers who want to starve the landfill and feed the soil. They monitor the compost carts to make sure nothing but compostable food and paper go in, answer questions and encourage market attendees to get on board.  Shifts are Saturday mornings only: 7-9:30 a.m. and 9:30-12 noon (ish).   Training materials and a sign up scheduler can be found here:  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050a44a8ac2ba75-saturday.  If you have questions about the collection and how you can pitch in, contact Muriel Williman muriel@orangecountync.gov
  • Eno River Festival seeking trash-free fanatics:   The 38th Annual Eno River Festival will be held July 1 and 4 this year from 10AM-6PM each day.  This is the MOTHER of ALL Trash-free festivals and as always they need stalwart volunteers to mind the stations and keep the sorting straight: compost, recycle or true trash.  Historically the Festival manages an impressive 85+% waste diversion. Volunteers get free admission the day of their shift to this wonderful festival filled with art, music (70 bands and 4 stages, wow!) food, and riverside fun!  Email Carolee: carolee@enoriver.org
  • Focus, people!  NewDream.org is looking for a few good consumers to take part in a focus group June 20, 5:30-7pm at the Scrap Exchange in Durham to explore thoughts on gift giving, gift receiving and holiday shopping.  Only 8-10 people are needed, but they are looking for a range of consumer types.  Mall rats, this means YOU!  Dinner will be provided. If you are interested in taking part, please contact Kelley Dennings: kdennings@gmail.com
