CTSI Announces New Funding to Foster Community-Research Partnerships

The Community Engagement Core(link is external) of the Duke Clinical & Translational Science Institute (CTSI) has announced a new, multi-tiered award program to engage community and academic partners in collaborative research that promotes novel ideas to improve community and population health.

The CTSI Population Health Improvement Awards program offers three levels of funding to stimulate and foster community-research partnerships. All applications must have at least one investigator from Duke University (full-time faculty members, doctoral students, postdoctoral trainees, or clinical fellows) and one community partner (e.g., local nonprofits, community organizations, government agencies, or members of practice-based research networks).

Community partners and Duke researchers can request free consultation services with the CTSI Community Engagement Core(link sends e-mail) to facilitate initial matchmaking between potential community and research partners.

The three levels of award are:

Level 1: Seed Awards of $1,500

These awards will assist project leadership with planning and developing partnerships that promote a novel idea or project to advance population health.  Funds can be used to support personnel, local travel necessary to develop the partnership, meals or travel expenses related to project meetings, and equipment and research supplies (not office supplies). The funds must be used within 12 months.

Level 2: Co-development Awards of up to $25,000

These awards will stimulate new community-engaged partnerships aimed at co-developing solutions designed to improve community and population health and address Durham County health priorities. Partnerships are expected to develop or pilot approaches to translate evidence-based discoveries into community settings. These partnerships can also develop pilot data for a larger implementation program or award.

Level 3: Advanced Partnership Awards of up to $25,000

These awards will assist established community-research partnerships that have already developed innovations to health problems and are ready to advance the testin gof these solutions through broader community-engaged implementation.
