On Tuesday, Nov. 30, Dean Vincent Guilamo-Ramos will address social determinants of health, examining historic large-scale health and socially transformative events that have elevated the profile of nurses in safeguarding the health and well-being of the country. The virtual event will be held from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m., and registration is required. The event will be held in English with simultaneous interpretation available in Spanish.

This event is the first in the 2021-22 Dean’s Lecture Series and builds upon the Fall 2021 Building Upon Excellence event series geared toward alumni and friends. The Dean’s Lecture Series on Nov. 30 serves as a bridge between the two series and continues critical conversations on important issues impacting the future of nursing.

Dean Ramos's lecture will explore the inseparably linked constructs of health equity and social determinants of health (SDOHs) and discuss implications for the role of nurses in changing the future of health care. The talk will define health equity and SDOHs; illustrate the role of SDOHs as underlying drivers of health inequity; describe the mechanisms through which SDOHs shape health outcomes and disparities; and discuss nursing competencies and applied exemplars that highlight nurses as well-positioned for addressing SDOHs and advancing health equity. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

The 2021-22 Building Upon Excellence Dean’s Lecture Series will feature speakers throughout the academic year, connecting the DUSON community, alumni, school partners and friends with experts and educators on topics that address the evolving role of nurses in health care, new models for nurse-driven health care delivery and future directions in nursing research and education.
