DHDAA Holds Annual Nearly New Shoppe Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon
Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs (DHDAA) held its annual Nearly New Shoppe Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon at the Hope Valley Country Club. The luncheon honors the medical faculty wives and other volunteers who staff the Nearly New Shoppe. Students from the Duke University School of Nursing and School of Medicine who receive scholarships from the proceeds of the shop shared their gratitude, in addition to the respective deans and staff of the schools. The Nearly New Shoppe, which is run by the Duke University Medical Faculty Wives organization, was founded in 1968 by 18 wives of Duke medical faculty members. An upscale combination of a thrift and consignment store, the Shop accepts gently used items, such as clothing, accessories, and household goods, and uses the profits to fund scholarships for medical and nursing students at Duke. To date, the Nearly New Shoppe has raised more than $500,000 for nursing school scholarships and a total of 49 nursing students have received assistance from this fund over the years. The shop will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2018.
