Diversity Corner: Impact of James Carter, Sr.

diversity corner logoJames Carter, Sr., was the first Black full professor of psychiatry in the Duke University Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. 

"While my father-in-law was a psychiatrist, his goal was to support all mental health practitioners and valued nurses and advanced practice nurses. Yes, he was my family, but more importantly he was a role model and mentor," said Brigit Carter, associate dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Duke Psychiatry recently presented its James H. Carter, Sr. Memorial Lecture, and James Carter produced at least two books "Death and Dying Among African-Americans: Cultural Characteristics and Coping Tidbits" and "Psychosocial Intervention with Aged African Americans."
