DPHS External Speaker Series
On May 14 from 12 until 1 p.m. Anirban Basu will present "Exploring Heterogeneity in the Effects of ICU Transfers on Mortality" as part of the DPHS External Speaker Series. This will take place at The Imperial Building, 215 Morris St. Suite 210.
Basu will discuss:
- The value of comparative effectiveness through real-world evidence
- The importance of identifying natural experiments occurring in the real-world to estimate causal effects
- The effect of heterogeneity and its importance on decision-making
Basu will highlight new methods to achieve these objectives using continuous instrumental variables and illustrate the application of these methods in assessing the impact of ICU transfers on patient mortality.
Basu’s research interests lie in revealing heterogeneity in clinical and economic outcomes in order to establish the value of individualized care. His work has focused on translating such information for public policy using innovative methods in comparative effectiveness and cost-effectiveness research. Basu has developed methods dealing with issues related to modeling health expenditure data, which is known for its idiosyncrasies and the difficulties it poses for applied health services researchers. He has also worked on methods used for making causal inferences using observational data.
