June is Pride month

Editor's Note: This message was sent by Duke Health leadership to the Duke Health community.

Happy Pride Month—a time when we celebrate our LGBTQIA+ colleagues and their many achievements, while working to ensure that people of every identity and orientation feel welcomed, safe, respected, and cared for.

Pride Month has its roots in the Stonewall riots of 1969, when members of the LGBTQIA+ community stood up against police brutality and discrimination in New York City. Since then, Pride has become a global movement, with celebrations and events held in cities around the world.

At Duke Health, we take pride in our people's health, and in one another, whether we are engaged in teaching, learning, providing care, or giving back. We want everyone who crosses our doorstep to have the freedom to be who they truly are, so we work for a culture in which all of us can be our authentic selves. As part of that goal, we are steadfast in our commitment to serve the LGBTQIA+ population—and to stand up for the team members who provide that care. This is especially important in times such as the ones we are currently living, in which anti-LGBTQIA legislation and bills seeking to restrict visibility and rights are continuously unfolding, including threatening those who are seeking and providing much needed care.

Health care is a human right, and regardless of opposition or social pressure, Duke Health will not waiver from our mission to provide inclusive and compassionate care for all. The Human Rights Campaign has recognized our deep and abiding commitment by naming us a leader on their Healthcare Equality Index. This recognition is important, and something for us to all take PRIDE in, yet we must take action on a daily basis, throughout the year, to ensure that we are truly living our values and not resting on the accolades of this prestigious recognition.

Your Duke Health Leadership
