DUSON Faculty and Students Join Bull City Fresh Start to help Durham's Homeless

DUSON faculty members and students recently participated in the annual Point-in-Time Count and Project Homeless Connect, part of Bull City Fresh Start which is coordinated by the City of Durham's Community Development Department. Donna Biederman, Irene Felsman and nine second semester ABSN students joined volunteers from the area to interview unsheltered homeless individuals in Durham. The count assists the city to maintain vital U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development funding for programs that assist homeless and housing insecure persons. Those who were interviewed and others who are homeless or housing insecure were invited to attend Project Homeless Connect, an event the following day that provided homeless individuals with health education screenings (vision, dental and foot health) and the opportunity to get an identification card, arrange housing service and make court appearances. ABSN students, supervised by Michelle Hartman and Jean Hanson, escorted participants around the event so individuals could access services they most needed.
