DUSON Faculty, Staff & Students Volunteer For Modified DPAC Performance For Children with Special Needs

Twelve faculty, staff and students volunteered at a recent Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC) performance for children with special needs. The performance of the Grinch that Stole Christmas was produced and offered in a modified version to enable individuals with special needs/disabilities to enjoy the musical as well as allow families an opportunity to have a special experience.

The modified performance offered lower volume, no strobe lights and limited "scary" effects. Attendees were offered adaptive toys to encourage sitting through the entire performance, ear plugs or noise cancelling headphones, weighted blankets and squishy balls. DPAC also offered "quiet" areas in the lobby for children that needed a break from the show and a multitude of volunteers to help support the children and their families.

Anne Derouin and Margaret "Meg" Carman were recruited for their medical expertise while staff and students volunteered in support areas for the event.
