DUSON Invited to Participate in Transgender Remembrance Day

trans remembrance dayDUSON Spectrum is supporting the Duke Divinity School Pride group's Transgender Day of Remembrance ceremony events, where those who have lost their lives will have their humanity recognized, be remembered, and laid in power. The initial event was held Wednesday, November 18, from 3 to 4 p.m. on Zoom. A restream will occur on Friday, November 20, from noon to 1 p.m. on Zoom.

Transgender Day of Remembrance (November 20) concludes Transgender Awareness Week, which runs annually from November 13 to 19.

Our transgender brothers, sisters, and siblings have long been victims of prejudice, violent acts, and murder. Unfortunately, 2020 is on track to being one of the most violent years recorded for transgender individuals, with 32 reported murders as of October 15. Black, Latinx, trans, femme, and gender non-conforming community members are victims of violence at a disproportional and unprecedented rate.

In recognition of Transgender Day of Remembrance, DUSON Spectrum released a statement:

"DUSON Spectrum would like to recognize trans and non-binary individuals who often suffer in silence. They (we) are victims of disproportionate rates of violence and hate crimes. Their (our) names are often gone and forgotten. In a time where so often a blind eye is turned to the persecution of the Trans community, voices need to be heard, particularly of Black, Latinx, and BIPOC femme trans members. It is important to note that the LGBTQIA+ movement is what it is because of strong Black Trans women willing to fight for our collective freedoms. Their stories need to be told and learned from.

These individuals who have lost their lives due to acts of violence chose to live their truth, which in itself is an act of cultural revolution. Revolution is to be celebrated. Truth is to be celebrated. Unfortunately, this truth is found threatening, as at least 32 Trans individuals in 2020 have been murdered.

Today, their names and memories are honored around the world and at DUSON. Today we say may you rest in power with the dignity you deserve. This week and this day affirm the responsibility we have to advocate for these lives and our community."
