DUSON Spectrum Host Interdisciplinary Educational Seminar
DUSON Spectrum, the LGBTQ and ally nursing student organization, partnered with faculty, the Center for Nursing Discovery and Duke Health members to host an interdisciplinary educational seminar regarding how to take sexual histories of all identities across the lifespan. More than 20 students from nursing, physician assistant, and physical therapy programs attended.
The event, held March 22, consisted of an interactive Jeopardy game to review terminology and concepts, role-playing to gather a sexual health history using four diverse patient scripts, and time to provide feedback as well as discuss themes and questions. Students gained insight and perspective from Deanna Adkins, MD and Kristen Russell, MSW, LCSW of Duke's Child and Adolescent Gender Care Clinic.
Remarks from participants included: "I found this very educational and eye-opening," "this was my first exposure and it was so helpful," "discussing was my favorite part because these things aren't talked about very often," and "it was great to practice asking questions and to consider some I've never thought about before." This informative event was offered to celebrate LGBT Health Awareness week (March 27-30) through promotion of open dialogue and is one that DUSON Spectrum hopes to offer annually to all health professions students at Duke.
