Abstract

In 2020, nursing and health services research communities were called to address and rise to several unprecedented challenges. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization had already designated 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife to illuminate the role of nurses and midwives in providing quality health services. Once the pandemic took hold, the critical role of nurses in our health care system became even clearer, with the nursing community immediately called to action. In the United States, the COVID-19 pandemic also challenged the nursing workforce and highlighted some critical deficiencies in our health care delivery system.
