Faculty, Alumni, Colleagues Inducted as Fellows into American Academy of Nursing
They were joined by alumni inductees at the ceremony in Washington, DC. The induction recognizes their significant contributions to nursing and commitment to advancing health equity.
Duke University School of Nursing is proud to announce the induction of four faculty members into the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) as Fellows. This prestigious honor recognizes their substantial and sustained contributions to the field of nursing and their commitment to advancing health equity. The newly inducted Fellows are Nancy Crego, Allison Lewinski, Devon Noonan, and Hanzhang Xu. Their dedication to excellence in nursing practice, education, and research has significantly impacted the Duke community and beyond.
The American Academy of Nursing, founded in 1973, is a professional organization dedicated to advancing health policy and practice through the generation, synthesis, and dissemination of nursing knowledge. AAN is an independent affiliate of the American Nurses Association (ANA) and serves as a think tank for nursing experts focused on improving health and healthcare. With over 3,000 Fellows, the Academy represents nursing's most accomplished leaders in policy, research, administration, practice, and academia.
Nancy Crego, PhD, RN, CCRN, CHSE, Assistant Professor examines health disparities affecting acute and chronically ill people. Her current focus is on Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) pain and understanding health system factors that perpetuate health inequities in people with this disease.
Allison Lewinski, PhD, MPH, RN, Assistant Professor analyzes the ability of virtual care interventions to reduce psychosocial distress, improve self-management, increase access to evidence-based care delivery, and improve patient and population health outcomes, especially among veterans and adults with chronic diseases.
Devon Noonan, PhD, MPH, FNP-BC, CARN, Associate Dean, Community Engaged Science, Director of Rural Health Equity, Center for Nursing Research, Associate Professor uses community-engaged approaches to develop health promotion and disease prevention interventions with the goal of reducing risk for chronic diseases including cancer and cardiovascular disease in rural communities.
Hanzhang Xu, PhD, RN, Associate Professor researches social determinants of health and disparities in health care and outcomes in diverse older adult populations, with a particular focus on cardiovascular and brain health.
In addition to the faculty members, five alumni and a former Duke University School of Nursing postdoctoral fellow were also inducted. They are:

Induction into the Academy is a significant recognition of one's accomplishments and signifies the future impact they will make in collaboration with their colleagues in the Academy. The induction ceremony will take place during the Academy’s annual Health Policy Conference, scheduled for October 31 – November 2, 2024, in Washington, DC. This year's conference theme, "Courageous Transformations Towards an Equitable Future," underscores the Academy's commitment to health equity and the transformative power of nursing leadership. The event will be a special tribute to showcase nursing leadership, science, and innovation, where colleagues, family, friends, and sponsors can gather to celebrate the power of nursing to transform health.
The induction of Drs. Crego, Lewinski, Xu, and Noonan, as well as our alumni, into the AAN is a testament to their exceptional leadership and contributions to the nursing profession. Their achievements reflect the high standards of excellence upheld by our school. As Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing, they will continue to influence health policy and practice, driving positive change and improving health outcomes for all.
