Goode and Merwin Submit AANA Research Application

Victoria Goode and Beth Merwin submitted their American Association of Nurse Anesthetists application entitled "The Economic Impact of State Opt-Out Designation on the Delivery of Surgical and Obstetric Care in Rural United States Countries." The proposal requests funding for a one-year period starting Nov. 1, 2017.

Abstract

The study examines the impact of State Opt-out designation since it's inception in 2001 through 2015 on the delivery of anesthetics to patients undergoing surgical and obstetrical services in the United States. This study uses multiple national large secondary data sets to develop trends in anesthesia workforce composition and to determine the influence of community characteristics and state OPT-out status on workforce composition; it also determines the additional influence of provider and patient characteristics on obstetrical services including the use of lumbar epidurals for labor and cesarean sections and for surgical services, mostly importantly, patient safety outcomes.
