Goode Submits AANA Research Application

Kudos to Victoria Goode for the submission of her American Association of Nurse Anesthetists proposal entitled "Surgical Outcomes for Colorectal Surgery Patients: Influences on AHRQ PSIs and 30-day Readmission." This proposal requests funding for a one-year period with a proposed start date of February 1, 2017.

Abstract: This research aims to examine the prevalence of PSI-13 in patients undergoing colorectal surgery and to determine influences of factors on the occurrence of this post-surgical complication. This research will use a national dataset, the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) and the Nationwide Readmission database (NRD) from the HCUP (HCUP, 2013). Findings from this research will quantify the degree to which undesirable outcomes including PSI-13 occur in the colorectal surgical patient population in an effort to pinpoint weaknesses in the cycle of care that need strengthening to meet the goals set by the IOM. Results of this systematic analysis of medical care delivery will inform both medical professionals and policy makers as to how patient safety and quality of care might be improved. The specific aims of this study:

  1. Determine the rates for PSI-13 in patients undergoing colorectal surgery in the nation’s acute care hospitals.
  2. Determine the influence of patient factors (age, gender and race), health risks (disease burden and comorbidity), health resources (SES and payer) and hospital factors (academic setting and geographical region, bed size) place on the occurrence of PSI-13 in patients recovering from colorectal surgery in the nation’s acute care hospitals.
  3. Determine the rate for 30-day hospital readmission in patients undergoing colorectal surgery and reasons for readmission in the nation’s acute care hospitals.
