Howard Presents at Simulation in Healthcare Conference

valerie howard headshotValerie Howard, vice dean of Academic Affairs, presented for the Society for Simulation in Healthcare: International Meeting for Simulation in Healthcare presentation on February 1. The event was originally scheduled for New Orleans.

The topic was "Simulation Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity (VUCA) during COVID 19." The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated changes that were already percolating in simulation, higher education and health care. “What is clear now is that many organizations will become extinct, some will be spared due to their positioning as essential organizations, and all will be changed forever by this experience” (Passmore & Mallis, 2020). Weaknesses in health care systems, curricula and educational models have been revealed. This panel of leaders presented their perspectives of the current and future state of leadership and simulation post (hopefully) COVID.

Other presenters included Suzan Kardong-Edgren, Donna McDermott, University of Miami, Kim Leighton, Itqan Clinical Simulation & Innovation Center, Qatar, Komal Bajaj, NYC Health and Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Jenny Rudolph, MGH Harvard Medical School, and Juli Maxworthy, University of San Francisco.
