Im and Chee Submit NIH R01 Multi-PI Application

Kudos to Eun-Ok Im and Wonshik Chee and their entire team for the submission of their NIH R01 Multi-PI application entitled "For Menopausal Symptom Management through Promoting Physical Activity: Midlife Asian American Women." This proposal requests funding for a five-year period with a start date of July 1, 2019.

Menopausal symptoms affect women’s overall health, and have a great impact on the conditions that are among the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in the U.S., such as coronary artery diseases, cervical cancer, breast cancer, osteoporosis, depression, incontinence and sleep disorders. Furthermore, menopausal symptoms significantly affect the women’s quality of life in menopausal transition and later on in their life. However, inadequate menopausal symptom management has been frequently reported in racial/ethnic minorities, especially among Asian Americans.

Thus, based on a former R01 study and Preliminary Studies, the research team developed and pilot-tested the first technology-based physical activity promotion program for menopausal symptom management that is tailored to midlife Asian Americans (TPAPP-MA). The program that will be accessible through computers and mobile devices (smart phones and tablets) has several unique features that overcome the shortcomings of existing programs. The purpose of this randomized intervention study is to examine the efficacy of the TPAPP-MA in reducing menopausal symptoms of midlife Asian American women (Chinese and Korean).
