Inspired by Kindness: One Student's Journey to Nursing
Haesu “Jessica” Jin plans to become a nurse practitioner specializing in oncology at an academic medical center. Her goal is to provide comprehensive care to cancer patients.
Haesu “Jessica” Jin was working as a research technician at Duke’s Division of Hematological Malignancies and Cellular Therapy when a patient said something that changed her life.
“She remarked on how I brightened her mood and suggested that I had the makings of a great nurse,” Jin recalled. “Her words resonated deeply with me, sparking a newfound desire for personal and career growth.”
With a renewed sense of purpose, Jin made the decision to pursue nursing, convinced that it was her true calling. She decided to pursue a Doctor of Nursing Practice and Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner Acute Care degree at Duke University’s School of Nursing.
“Duke's renowned faculty, emphasis on interprofessional collaboration and immersive clinical partnerships promised an unparalleled learning experience,” Jin said. “Additionally, its culture of service and community engagement aligned with my core values. By selecting Duke, I joined a vibrant community dedicated to innovation, compassion and academic rigor.”
Jin plans to graduate in 2026 and says her experience at Duke has been transformative. She has embraced the rigorous coursework and challenging clinical experiences that have allowed her to have invaluable hands-on experiences in diverse health care settings.
“Beyond academics, Duke's vibrant campus community has offered countless opportunities for personal and professional growth. I got married at the Duke Chapel last June,” Jin said. “As I reflect on my time at Duke, I'm grateful for the mentorship, experiences and connections that have prepared me for a successful career as a nurse practitioner, as well as memories that will last a lifetime.”
After graduation, Jin plans to become a nurse practitioner specializing in oncology at an academic medical center. Her goal is to provide comprehensive care to cancer patients, contribute to cutting-edge research, mentor future health care professionals and play a pivotal role in advancing oncology care.
“My ultimate goal is to make a meaningful impact in the lives of cancer patients and their families, helping them navigate their journey with dignity, compassion and hope,” she said. “I'm eager to leverage Duke's resources and expertise in shaping my future as a leader in nursing practice.”
