Intercultural Learning in Education Abroad Workshop
Are you interested in intercultural learning in education abroad? If so, a workshop will be offered on Dec. 8 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Bentley University in Massachusetts. More information, and a link to register is provided below.
The Need to Enhance Intercultural Learning
Research on education abroad demonstrates the central role of ‘cultural mentoring’ to help students develop these important skills, especially as they study and live in increasingly diverse environments, and engage in the global workplace after graduation.
This research has also shown that simply traveling to another country by itself does not cause students to develop intercultural competence or become more capable of interacting with individuals across language barriers or cultural difference. Intentionality in designing intercultural experiences abroad for students is essential.
The Institute for Cross-Cultural Teaching and Learning invites anyone who is interested in enhancing intercultural learning -- from faculty leading programs to education abroad professionals, and anyone who supports student learning abroad -- to attend this important full-day workshop.
Learning Objectives
This workshop is designed to be a hands-on, active learning environment in which all participants are actively engaged. By the conclusion of the workshop, you will:
- Gain a foundation in intercultural concepts and theories to help you and students understand cultural similarities and differences;
- Examine your own cultural background and its relevance and impact on thought, behavior and experience;
- Recognize and dispel common myths about intercultural learning;
- Begin to identify ways to incorporate intercultural learning into your classes and work with students;
- Recognize common obstacles that hinder intercultural learning in study abroad programs.
