Kudos to Mariam Kayle, assistant professor, and her entire team for the submission of their subcontract application on the NCDHHS CDC proposal entitled "NC Sickle Cell Surveillance Program — Core and Optional Components." This proposal requests funding for a three-year period starting September 30.
Project Description
The purposes of the Core Component of the NC Sickle Cell Surveillance Program are to (1) implement a high-quality, statewide, population-based sickle cell disease (SCD) surveillance program in NC and (2) disseminate aggregate level reports to stakeholders and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on the epidemiology and health care utilization patterns for SCD in NC.
The purpose of the Optional Component in the NC Sickle Cell Surveillance program application is to conduct individual-level data analyses and disseminate results that will inform stakeholders and improve the care of people with SCD through the identification of patients at increased risk of adverse outcomes, more effective delivery of care and enhanced outreach and advocacy with the state government.
To accomplish the overall goal of the project, the Duke team will be subcontracted by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) to conducted the activities on the proposed project. Kayle will lead and support all the Duke team to curate and link multiple statewide and clinical centers data sources to accomplish the project goals. The Duke team will work collaboratively with NCDHHS and other subcontracts contracted by the NCDHHS, namely Dr. Ify Osunkwo (Atrium Health) and Piedmont Health Services, to achieve the goals of the application if awarded.
Kayle will contribute her expertise in the use of large data in SCD and lead all strategies and activities under this application. She will be responsible for oversight and hiring of staff and leading the team of investigators at Duke on this application and will collaborate closely with the co-PI at DHHS as well as all other collaborators.
