Kayle Submits CDC Application

Kudos to Mariam Kayle, assistant professor, and her entire team for the submission of their CDC application entitled "Capacity Building for Sickle Cell Disease Surveillance in North Carolina (Component A)." This proposal requests funding for a one-year period with a start date of Sept. 15, 2019.

The purpose of this application is to build capacity for the implementation of a state-wide, population-based SCD surveillance program in North Carolina by building partnerships and leveraging existing data sources at the level of the state, community-based organization, as well as the six comprehensive sickle cell centers across the state. This application will also explore the feasibility of partnering with private health insurers and clinical laboratories to identify people with SCD who are not linked to a comprehensive sickle cell center or to state databases. By the end of the one-year performance period, this application will achieve the following outcomes:

1. Increased understanding of the utility of SCD surveillance data among patients, family members, health care providers, and policymakers.

2. Increased standardization of methods for SCD surveillance.
