Kreider and Atyabi Publish Article in JNP

Kathryn KreiderKathryn Kreider, associate professor, and recent DNP graduate Vanessa Atyabi published an article entitled "Screening for Diabetes and Self-Care in Patients With Severe Mental Illness" in The Journal for Nurse Practitioners.

Multifactorial influences put patients with severe mental illness (SMI) at increased risk for diabetes; however, diabetes screening deficits exist. This project aimed to increase diabetes screening rates in 3,271 patients with SMI in a patient-centered medical home in Southern California using an American Diabetes Association (2017) adapted algorithm. In addition, patients with diabetes and SMI were instructed to select self-care behavior goals. This report details the outcomes of the evidence-based algorithm on diabetes screening rates and percentage of uncontrolled diabetes (A1c > 9%) and the utility of self-care goal setting in the population with SMI.
