Lipkus Submits NIH R21 on Pilot Trial on Behaviors Among Colorectal Cancer Survivors

Kudos to Isaac Lipkus and his entire team for the submission of their NIH R21 application entitled "Pilot Trial of a Multi-Component Intervention to Reduce Sedentary Behaviors among Colorectal Cancer Survivors." This proposal requests funding for a two-year period with a start date of July 1, 2017.

Abstract: CRC survivors can benefit from interventions that promote reductions in sedentary behaviors. Yet, interventions designed specifically to achieve this goal in this population, and cancer survivors generally, are lacking. Proposed is a feasibility trial of a multicomponent intervention (i.e., video, planning worksheet, health coaching) to reduce sedentary behaviors among CRC survivors. We will recruit 45 early stage CRC survivors during a return clinic visit following surgery. This study is significant and innovative along many fronts. First, we target sedentary behaviors, a class of behaviors with physical and potentially quality of life implications for cancer survivors. Second, we will gain insights, currently lacking, as to what intervention components may influence sedentary behaviors in this population. Third, we will learn which psychosocial outcomes appear modified by our intervention. Fourth, comments from survivors will help refine our intervention to be tested further in an adequately powered larger randomized controlled trial.
